Technology glossary

AMD FreeSync

AMD’s variable refresh rate certification that matches the display refresh rate to the graphics card’s frame rate.

FreeSync lets the display follow the game’s frame rate when it is not constant, reducing tearing and stutter. According to AMD it works over HDMI and DisplayPort and targets low latency.

There are three tiers: FreeSync, FreeSync Premium and FreeSync Premium Pro. On monitors, TVs and projectors all three include low framerate compensation (LFC). Premium and Premium Pro require a maximum refresh rate of at least 200 Hz below 3440 horizontal pixels, and at least 120 Hz at 3440 pixels and above.

LFC keeps sync when the frame rate falls below the display’s minimum refresh rate by showing frames more than once. Premium Pro adds requirements for HDR content; its baseline HDR requirement is above HDR 400.
