MSI MPG 491CQP QD-OLED

The MPG 491CQP QD-OLED is MSI’s 49-inch 5120 × 1440 super-ultrawide gaming monitor with an 1800R curve, released in 2024. It offers 144 Hz, 0.03 ms response, DisplayHDR True Black 400, 99% DCI-P3, FreeSync Premium Pro, USB-C with 90 W charging, KVM and PiP/PbP, and MSI gives a 3-year warranty that covers panel burn-in. Independent testing found excellent factory calibration (average ΔE 0.95 in sRGB) and typical brightness of 226 nits, slightly below MSI’s figure. Colour fringing on text edges from the QD-OLED pixel structure and an OLED care cycle that starts unexpectedly and cannot be stopped were criticised. Owners praise the picture, especially for sim racing.

Specifications

SpecificationValue
Panel49-inch QD-OLED; 5120 × 1440 (DQHD), 32:9; 1800R curve

The 32:9 ratio gives a workspace equivalent to two 27-inch 1440p monitors side by side. The 1800R curve keeps the edges closer to the eyes.

Refresh and response144 Hz (adaptive range 48–144 Hz); 0.03 ms (GtG)

Adaptive sync prevents tearing while the frame rate stays between 48 and 144. Reaching 144 fps at full resolution needs a very powerful graphics card.

Brightness and contrastTypical SDR 250 nits; 1,500,000:1; DisplayHDR True Black 400

True Black 400 is the OLED-class certification for very low black level and 400-nit HDR brightness.

Colour99% DCI-P3, 146% sRGB, 98% Adobe RGB; 10-bit (1.07 billion colours)
Adaptive syncAMD FreeSync Premium Pro

The Premium Pro tier includes low frame rate compensation and low-latency tone mapping in HDR.

Connections1 × DisplayPort 1.4a; 2 × HDMI 2.1; 1 × USB-C (DP Alt Mode, 90 W PD); 2 × USB 2.0 Type-A; 1 × USB 2.0 Type-B; headphone out

USB-C takes video from a laptop over one cable and charges it at up to 90 W. The USB ports run at USB 2.0 speed; there are no built-in speakers.

Multi-viewPiP / PbP

PbP splits the 49-inch screen side by side between two sources to show two computers at once; PiP shows one source in a small window over the other.

Strengths and limitations

  • Profesional Review measured 226 nits in User mode (MSI quotes 250 nits typical) and a black level of 0 nits. sRGB mode gave an average ΔE of 0.95 with 100% coverage and Display P3 mode an average ΔE of 1.57; the team says no extra calibration is needed. Gamma was slightly low at 2.15 and colour temperature 6609 K. PiP/PbP options are extensive, and there is a KVM that controls two computers with one keyboard and mouse via USB-C and USB-B, plus OLED Care 2.0. Brightness only just adequate, heavy plastic and uneven finishes on the back and stand, no speakers and USB 2.0 speeds were counted as negatives.

Profesional Review: MSI MPG 491CQP QD-OLED review
  • In TechRadar’s hands-on testing blacks and colours were very strong with no visible screen glow; reaching high frame rates at full resolution was said to need an RTX 4080 or RX 7900 XTX class card. Text and Windows interface elements showed fringing at the edges caused by the QD-OLED pixel layout. The KVM function in the built-in USB hub was found handy. The OLED Care routine starting unexpectedly, turning the screen off for 5–30 minutes and not being stoppable, burn-in risk and no speakers were criticised.
