Technology glossary

Active noise cancellation (ANC)

Microphones detect surrounding sound and the headphones generate an opposing signal to reduce it. This differs from the passive isolation provided by the ear cups.

Sony describes the effect as particularly useful for low-frequency sounds such as vehicles and air conditioning. It does not remove every sound.

Fit and covered microphones can change the result. ANC reduces what the listener hears; cleaning up the microphone signal sent to the other person during a call is a separate feature.
