  1. Metni önce bir kez sözlüğe bakmadan baştan sona okuyun. Her kelimeyi anlamanız gerekmiyor, ne anlatıldığını yakalamanız yeterli.
  2. İkinci okumada bilmediğiniz kelimelerin altını çizin ve anlamlarını cümleden tahmin etmeye çalışın.

1. A Trip to Cappadocia (Kapadokya Gezisi)

Last spring, my friend Selin and I went to Cappadocia for three days. We took a night bus from Istanbul, and the journey was long. We arrived in Göreme early in the morning, very tired. Our hotel was a cave hotel, and our room was inside a rock. It was cool and quiet.

On the second day, we woke up at five o'clock to see the balloons. There were more than a hundred of them in the sky. We didn't fly, because it was too expensive for us, but watching them from a hill was enough. In the afternoon, we walked through a valley and had lunch in a small village.

I want to go back one day, maybe in winter, when everything is white.

2. Learning to Cook Menemen (Menemen Yapmayı Öğrenmek)

I never cooked when I lived with my parents. When I moved to a new city for university, I had a problem: I was always hungry, and I didn't have much money. One evening, I called my mother and asked, "How do you make menemen?" She laughed, but she explained everything.

First, you chop some green peppers and two tomatoes. You cook the peppers in olive oil for a few minutes, then you add the tomatoes. When the tomatoes are soft, you break three eggs into the pan and stir slowly. Some people add onions and some people don't. They argue about it a lot.

My first menemen was too salty, but my roommate ate all of it. Now I make it every Sunday.

Artık her pazar yapıyorum.

3. A Lost Phone (Kayıp Telefon)

Last Tuesday was a terrible day. I was on the metro, and I was very tired after work. I got off at my stop, walked home and made a cup of tea. Then I looked for my phone. It wasn't in my bag. It wasn't in my pocket. I felt sick. All my photos were on that phone!

I used my laptop to call my own number, and after a few rings, a woman answered. "Hello, I found this phone on the seat next to me," she said. She was a teacher, and she lived near the last stop of the line.

The next morning, I went there and met her in front of a bakery. I gave her a box of chocolates. She said, "You didn't have to," but she took it with a big smile.

4. My New Neighbors (Yeni Komşularım)

A new family moved into the flat next to ours last month. At first, I only heard them. There was a lot of noise: boxes, furniture and a child who sang the same song again and again.

One evening, someone knocked on our door. It was the father of the family, a tall man with a friendly face. He had a plate of börek in his hands. "We are your new neighbors. My wife made this for you," he said.

Their names are Hasan and Merve, and their daughter, Defne, is six. Now Defne visits us every weekend to play with our cat. Last week, she taught me the song she sings all the time. I can't get it out of my head.

Artık Defne her hafta sonu kedimizle oynamaya bize geliyor. Geçen hafta bana hep söylediği o şarkıyı öğretti. Bir türlü kafamdan çıkmıyor.

5. A Day Without the Internet (İnternetsiz Bir Gün)

Last Saturday, the internet stopped working in our building. The company said they were going to fix it "in the evening". At first, I didn't know what to do. In the first hour, I picked up my phone twenty times, just out of habit.

Then I found an old novel on my shelf. I started it three years ago and never finished it. I made some coffee, sat by the window and read for two hours. After that, I went for a walk and found a small café only two streets from my home. I didn't know about it before!

When the internet came back at nine o'clock, I checked my messages. There was nothing important. I was a little surprised, and a little happy.

6. The Football Match (Futbol Maçı)

My uncle had two tickets for the big match on Sunday, and he invited me. I was very excited because it was my first time in a real stadium. We arrived two hours early, but the streets were already full of people in red and yellow shirts.

Inside, the noise was incredible. Forty thousand people sang together, and I could feel the songs in my chest. Our team played badly in the first half, and the other team scored a goal. My uncle didn't say a word.

In the second half, everything changed. We scored twice in ten minutes, and a man I didn't know hugged me. We won 2-1. I lost my voice, but I didn't care.

Amcam tek kelime etmedi.

İkinci yarıda her şey değişti. On dakikada iki gol attık ve hiç tanımadığım bir adam bana sarıldı. Maçı 2-1 kazandık. Sesim kısıldı ama hiç umurumda değildi.

7. A Birthday Present (Bir Doğum Günü Hediyesi)

My sister's birthday was on Friday, and on Thursday evening I still didn't have a present for her. I went to the shopping mall after work. First, I looked at clothes, but I didn't know her size. Then I looked at perfumes, but they all smelled the same to me. I was tired and a bit angry with myself.

Then I remembered something. Last summer, she wanted to learn to paint, but she never started. I went to an art shop and bought a set of watercolors, some brushes and a small notebook with thick paper.

On Friday, she opened the box and was quiet for a moment. Then she said, "You remembered!" It was the cheapest present I ever bought her, and the best one.

8. My First Day at Work (İşteki İlk Günüm)

I started my first job in September. I was a junior designer at a small company. On my first day, I woke up at six, although work started at nine. I changed my shirt three times.

When I arrived at the office, my manager, Burak, showed me my desk and introduced me to the team. There were only eight people, and everyone was friendly. At lunch, they took me to a small restaurant with home-style food.

In the afternoon, Burak gave me my first task: a poster for a coffee shop. I worked on it for hours and showed it to him nervously. He looked at it for a long time and said, "Good start. Now make the text bigger." I still remember that sentence.

9. A Visit to the Doctor (Doktora Gitmek)

Last week, I had a sore throat and a headache, and I felt hot all the time. On Wednesday morning, I couldn't get out of bed, so I made an appointment at the health center near my house. The waiting room was full of coughing people. After forty minutes, a nurse called my name.

The doctor was a young woman who spoke very quickly. She looked at my throat, listened to my chest and asked me some questions: "Do you smoke? Are you allergic to anything?" Then she said, "It's a virus. You don't need antibiotics. Drink a lot of water, rest, and stay at home for three days."

I was a little disappointed. I wanted a magic medicine. But she was right. On Saturday, I felt much better.

10. Plans for the Summer (Yaz Planları)

This summer is going to be different. Every year, my family goes to the same town on the Aegean coast and stays in the same hotel. We swim, we eat fish, and we come back. It is nice, but it is always the same.

This year, I am going to travel alone for the first time. I am going to take the train from Ankara to Kars. The journey takes more than a day, and people say the views are beautiful, especially in the mountains. In Kars, I am going to visit the ancient city of Ani and try the famous cheese.

My mother is a bit worried. "What are you going to do on a train for a whole day?" she asked. I already know the answer: I am going to read, look out of the window and talk to strangers.

Metnin Türkçesi

Bu yaz farklı geçecek. Ailem her yıl Ege kıyısındaki aynı kasabaya gider ve aynı otelde kalır. Denize gireriz, balık yeriz ve döneriz. Güzel ama hep aynı.

Bu yıl ilk kez tek başıma seyahat edeceğim. Ankara'dan Kars'a trenle gideceğim.
