Smartwatches · 2025 · Garmin
Garmin's high-end running and triathlon watch. Alongside a 47 mm titanium bezel, sapphire lens and AMOLED display it adds an LED flashlight, speaker and microphone, an ECG app and multi-band GNSS, with up to 15 days in smartwatch mode. Tests praise heart-rate and GPS accuracy; battery drops quickly with the always-on display, and the first months brought reports of crashes and ghost touches.

Garmin says the Forerunner 970 has its brightest AMOLED display yet. This is a manufacturer claim; no nit figure is published. Garmin
In DC Rainmaker's roughly month-long test wrist heart rate tracked a chest strap closely and GPS was strong on road, trail and mountain; signal reacquisition in open water was weak. With always-on display at default brightness the battery lasted about 2.5 days; lowest brightness fixed this. The watch crashed several times when the microphone activated, round-trip rerouting ended navigation (Garmin confirmed the bug), and map rendering was slow. Running tolerance was judged too conservative.
DC Rainmaker: Garmin Forerunner 970 in-depth reviewAccording to Notebookcheck, on 16 July 2025 Garmin released hotfix 6.18 for the Forerunner 570 and 970 to reduce ghost touches (inputs registered without the user touching), widely reported on the forum. The article also relays reports of screen freezes when entering a PIN or scrolling, and an altimeter issue on the 970, after the update.
Notebookcheck: New Garmin Forerunner smartwatches get hotfix for ghost touch issueIn the Garmin forum thread “Forerunner 970 Early Issues” Fozzee1970 reported constant reboots with the phone assistant, occasional reboots in Maps and 20 minutes of lost heart rate mid-run. Antforce described reboots tied first to the timer, then Maps, then random, with heart-rate data not syncing to Connect; arcalius had two crashes while setting up a workout; another user saw battery fall from 50% to 21% within hours. A Garmin account asked to make direct contact; no fix appears in the thread.
Garmin Forums: Forerunner 970 Early IssuesOn the same forum a user who says they bought the watch about a month earlier reported it missing more than half of their naps, freezing four times and needing restarts, delivering notifications inconsistently, and counting about 2,000 steps on a 45-minute bus ride.
