ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2024) G614JIR-N4107X

The ROG Strix G16 G614JIR is ASUS’s high-power 16-inch gaming laptop for 2024. It pairs the 24-core Core i9-14900HX with an RTX 4070 Laptop GPU running at up to 140 W, plus a 240 Hz 2.5K display, MUX switch, two SO-DIMM and two M.2 slots, Thunderbolt 4 and a 90 Wh battery. The test praised the display and connectivity; fan noise at full power, short battery life and the CPU running into its thermal limit were the drawbacks.

G614JIR-N4107X: Intel Core i9-14900HX, GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU 8 GB (140 W = 115 W + 25 W Dynamic Boost), 32 GB DDR5-5600, 2 TB SSD, 16-inch 2560 × 1600 240 Hz display, Windows 11 Pro. The RTX 4060 G614JVR, the RTX 4080 G614JZR and G614JIR SKUs with other RAM/SSD sizes are separate configurations.

Specifications

SpecificationValue
ProcessorIntel Core i9-14900HX: 24 cores, 32 threads, 2.2 GHz, up to 5.8 GHz, 36 MB cache

HX-series chips are laptop processors that run at high power limits for gaming and content creation; in multi-core work the chassis cooling decides the result.

GraphicsNVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU, 8 GB GDDR6; 2225 MHz at 140 W (2175 MHz boost + 50 MHz OC; 115 W + 25 W Dynamic Boost)

140 W is the maximum GPU power when Dynamic Boost borrows budget from the CPU: 25 W is added to the sustained 115 W depending on load balance. This laptop GPU is not the same product as the desktop RTX 4070.

DisplayROG Nebula Display: 16-inch, 2560 × 1600 (16:10), IPS-level, anti-glare; 240 Hz, 3 ms; 100% DCI-P3; G-Sync; Pantone Validated

240 Hz makes motion smoother when a game approaches 240 frames per second; G-Sync matches refresh to frame rate to reduce tearing. 100% DCI-P3 means a wide gamut covering the cinema colour space; Pantone validation refers to factory colour calibration.

Graphics switchingMUX Switch + NVIDIA Advanced Optimus

The MUX connects the display directly to the RTX GPU to cut latency and performance loss in games; Advanced Optimus can switch without a restart.

Memory32 GB: 2 × 16 GB DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM, dual channel; up to 32 GB

Both slots are populated and ASUS lists 32 GB as the maximum for this model; the modules are not soldered. ASUS notes memory speed varies by CPU.

Storage2 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD; two M.2 PCIe slots in total

ASUS counts two M.2 PCIe slots including the used one; a second SSD can go in the other slot.

Ports1 × Thunderbolt 4 (40 Gbit/s, DisplayPort), 1 × USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C (10 Gbit/s, DisplayPort / power delivery / G-SYNC), 2 × USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A (10 Gbit/s), 1 × HDMI 2.1 FRL, 1 × RJ45, 3.5 mm audio

ASUS lists G-SYNC only for the USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, which also accepts charging from the 100 W USB-C adapter. HDMI 2.1 FRL allows high refresh rates at high resolution on compatible TVs and monitors.

WirelessWi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) tri-band 2×2, Bluetooth 5.2

Wi-Fi 6E can use the 6 GHz band, subject to national regulation and Windows 11 driver support.

KeyboardPer-key RGB backlit chiclet keyboard, touchpad with NumberPad support; Aura Sync logo and light bar
Audio and camera2 speakers with Smart Amp, Dolby Atmos, Hi-Res certification for headphones, AI noise cancelling, array microphone; 720p HD camera
Battery and power90 Wh, 4-cell lithium-ion; 280 W adapter (20 V, 14 A, ø6.0 mm) and 100 W USB-C adapter

ASUS lists a 100 W USB-C adapter in the box as well; the 280 W brick is for full performance. Included adapters and accessories can vary by country.

Operating systemWindows 11 Pro
SecurityFirmware TPM, BIOS administrator and user password
In the boxROG backpack, ROG Impact gaming mouse, 100 W USB-C adapter

ASUS says included accessories vary by country.

Strengths and limitations

  • In Geeknetic’s test the display measured 430 cd/m² SDR white, 440 nits in small HDR areas and 1140:1 contrast, covering nearly all of sRGB and DCI-P3 and about 90% of Adobe RGB. Factory calibration leaned slightly blue (average ΔE 3.91). The CPU briefly exceeded 180 W and settled around 150 W while the GPU reached 140 W; the CPU hit 98 °C and thermally throttled, the GPU stayed well below its limit. Outer surfaces stayed under 35 °C in a 23 °C room, but fans were loud at full power. Battery lasted 3 hours at maximum brightness and a little over 4 hours with lower brightness and power saving. The reviewer found high settings easy at Full HD, while 2.5K needed lower settings or DLSS/FSR; he saw an imbalance between the i9 and the RTX 4070 and criticised the preinstalled McAfee and the lack of a card reader.
