MSI Sword 16 HX B14VGKG-063ID

The Sword 16 HX B14VGKG is MSI’s 16-inch gaming laptop with a 14th-gen Intel HX processor and a discrete RTX 4070 Laptop GPU. In this SKU the GPU runs at up to 115 W with Dynamic Boost and has 8 GB of GDDR6; it offers a QHD+ 240 Hz IPS-level display, up to 96 GB of DDR5 in two SO-DIMM slots and two M.2 slots, one of them PCIe Gen5 compatible. In independent testing the CPU held steady at around 96 W in the top performance mode; the plastic chassis collecting grime, no charging over USB-C and weak touchpad palm rejection were criticised. Unlike this SKU, the tested unit had an FHD+ 144 Hz display.

Sword 16 HX B14VGKG-063ID: Core i7-14700HX, RTX 4070 Laptop GPU (115 W), 16 GB DDR5, 1 TB SSD, QHD+ 240 Hz display. B14VEKG (RTX 4050) and B14VFKG (RTX 4060) in the same family, and B14VGKG configurations with an FHD+ 144 Hz display, are different.

Specifications

SpecificationValue
ProcessorIntel Core i7-14700HX; 20 cores (8 P + 12 E), 28 threads, 33 MB cache, up to 5.5 GHz

The HX series is a high-power laptop processor; real performance depends on MSI’s power modes and cooling.

GraphicsNVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU; 8 GB GDDR6; boost up to 2115 MHz; 321 AI TOPS
GPU power limitUp to 115 W maximum graphics power with Dynamic Boost

The RTX 4070 Laptop GPU can be configured between 35 and 115 W; this SKU sits at the top of that range. Dynamic Boost shifts power to the GPU when CPU load is low.

Display16-inch QHD+ (2560 × 1600), 240 Hz, IPS-level panel, 100% DCI-P3 (typical)

The 16:10 ratio gives more vertical space at the same width; 240 Hz shows motion more smoothly in high-frame-rate games.

Memory16 GB (2 × 8 GB) DDR5-5600; 2 SO-DIMM slots, up to 96 GB

Memory is not soldered; capacity can be raised by replacing the two modules.

Storage1 TB NVMe SSD (PCIe Gen4); 1 × M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 and 1 × M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen5-compatible slot

The second slot allows an extra SSD; the Gen5-compatible slot accepts faster new-generation SSDs.

Ports3 × USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A; 1 × Type-C (USB 3.2 Gen 2, DisplayPort, Power Delivery 3.0); 1 × HDMI 2.1 (8K 60 Hz / 4K 120 Hz); headphone/mic combo jack; Gigabit Ethernet

The Type-C port outputs video. Independent testing reports that the laptop cannot be charged over USB-C; the 200 W adapter is used for charging.

WirelessIntel Wi-Fi 6E AX211; Bluetooth 5.4
Keyboard and camera24-zone RGB keyboard, Copilot key; 720p 30 fps HD webcam (3DNR)

Strengths and limitations

  • Notebookcheck tested a B14VGKG unit with the same CPU and GPU. In Extreme Performance mode (PL1 100 W / PL2 120 W) the CPU held around 96 W and 4.3 GHz in a Cinebench R15 loop, with scores between 3,250 and 3,330; in Balanced mode power dropped from 85 W to 55 W. The plastic chassis is sturdy but collects fingerprints and grime. The laptop cannot be charged over USB-C, and the thick adapter cable warms up next to the exhaust vent. A 1440p/144 Hz monitor on HDMI was initially limited to 100 Hz; a BIOS update fixed it. Touchpad palm rejection is weak, and DPC latency was too high for real-time audio work. The bottom cover has 12 screws, one under a warranty sticker; RAM can be upgraded to 96 GB. This unit had an FHD+ 144 Hz panel, so its measured brightness and colour results do not apply to this SKU’s QHD+ display.
