MagSafe (iPhone)

Apple’s wireless charging system that uses magnets on the back of the iPhone to align chargers and accessories.

MagSafe arrived with the iPhone 12 range and uses magnets to seat chargers and accessories such as cases and wallets in the right spot. Apple says this magnetic alignment makes wireless charging faster and more efficient.

Charging speed depends on the iPhone model, the adapter’s wattage and the charger version. According to Apple’s table, iPhone 15 and earlier charge at up to 15 W on a MagSafe Charger connected to a 20 W or higher USB-C adapter; iPhone 12 mini and 13 mini are limited to 12 W. Newer models with newer chargers can reach up to 25 W.

If a cable is also connected, the iPhone charges through the cable. Wireless charging power is reduced while an accessory such as headphones is plugged into the port.

Apple advises not placing credit cards, security badges or passports between the phone and the charger, as the magnets can damage magnetic strips and RFID chips.

The MagSafe Charger also charges other Qi-compatible phones, but power and charge times differ on those.
