Apple iPhone 16

iPhone 16 is Apple’s 2024 standard phone. It has the A18 chip, a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, a 48 MP Fusion main camera and 12 MP ultra-wide camera, the new Camera Control and the Action button; it supports 25 W wireless charging over MagSafe and Qi2, Wi-Fi 7 and emergency messaging via satellite. The USB-C port runs at USB 2 speed. An independent review liked the performance and cameras but criticised Camera Control’s position and the way pressing it shakes the phone; owners are especially happy with photo quality.

6.1-inch iPhone 16; 128, 256 and 512 GB; black, white, pink, teal and ultramarine. The model number varies by region (e.g. India A3287). The 6.7-inch iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16e are separate models.

Specifications

SpecificationValue
ChipA18; 6-core CPU (2 performance + 4 efficiency), 5-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine

Apple says the A18, built on second-generation 3 nm technology, is up to 30% faster in CPU and 40% in GPU than the A16 Bionic and supports hardware ray tracing. The A18 Pro in iPhone 16 Pro is a different chip.

Display6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED; 2556 × 1179, 460 ppi; Dynamic Island

Typical brightness is 1000 nits, 1600 nits HDR and 2000 nits peak outdoors, with a 1-nit minimum. 2,000,000:1 contrast, P3 wide colour and True Tone. Apple does not list a refresh rate; ProMotion and always-on display are on the Pro models.

Apple says it is 50% tougher than the first-generation Ceramic Shield. The back is colour-infused glass and the frame is aluminium.

Strengths and limitations

  • In BGR’s review dated 24 September 2024, iPhone 16 scored 3282 single-core and 7911 multi-core in Geekbench 6 and 4060 in 3DMark Wild Life Extreme; the review says the CPU beats Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phones but the GPU does not. Battery life was judged better than the previous generation (no hours measured). The 60 Hz screen and the lack of always-on display without ProMotion were criticised; the screen was readable in sunlight. Photos were generally good, including low light, 2× and macro. Camera Control was useful once learned, but its position is awkward in both orientations, it does not open the camera with the screen off, and pressing it can shake the phone and blur shots at high zoom.

BGR review, test duration not stated; Geekbench and 3DMark scores from one unit.
