Technology glossary
Apple’s second-generation front cover glass with an anti-reflective coating, used on iPhones from 2025.
Ceramic Shield 2 is the front cover glass announced with the iPhone 17 family. Apple says it offers 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation and reduces glare with an improved anti-reflective coating.
Apple calls it tougher than any smartphone glass or glass-ceramic but gives no drop or crack test details. Scratch resistance does not mean the glass is unbreakable; impacts and drops can still damage it.
Some models use the previous-generation Ceramic Shield on the back; the Ceramic Shield 2 name covers only the stated surface.

The iPhone 17e is Apple's 2026 entry phone: A19 chip, 6.1-inch 60 Hz OLED display, a single 48 MP rear camera, the C1X modem and, new this time, 15 W MagSafe charging. Tests show longer battery life than the iPhone 16e; the 60 Hz display, single camera and USB 2 speed are its main limits.

The iPhone 17 Pro is Apple’s 6.3-inch Pro model. It swaps the earlier titanium frame for an aluminium unibody with a vapor chamber and adds the A19 Pro chip, three 48MP rear cameras with an 8× optical-quality telephoto, an 18MP square-sensor front camera and Wi-Fi 7 via the Apple N1 chip. Tests found better battery life and sustained performance than the previous generation; the anodised coating on the sharp camera plateau edges can wear from knocks. Owners like the camera, colour and battery life; a few report heat warnings while charging.

The iPhone 17 is Apple’s base iPhone for the 2025 generation: a 6.3-inch 120 Hz ProMotion OLED display, the A19 chip, two 48 MP rear cameras and an 18 MP Center Stage front camera. The display has Always-On and a 3,000-nit outdoor peak; wireless connectivity is handled by Apple’s N1 chip (Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6). The USB-C port stays at USB 2 speed for data transfer. In the first months some owners complained about Wi-Fi dropping when unlocking the phone, and one thread after iOS 26.3 about overheating.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is Apple's largest 2025 Pro phone: a 6.9-inch 120 Hz ProMotion OLED screen, the A19 Pro, three 48 MP rear cameras and a 4× (100 mm) tetraprism telephoto. The body is an aluminium unibody with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front. Battery life tests place it among the best in its class; owners praise the camera, battery and speed, while some complain about pressing Camera Control by accident and about wear on the aluminium edges.

The iPhone Air is Apple's thinnest phone at 5.64 mm: a 6.5-inch 120 Hz OLED display, the A19 Pro chip, a single 48 MP rear camera and eSIM only. Its thinness costs battery, speaker and camera features; tests put battery life close to the iPhone 17 and well behind the Pro models.
