Sony α7 V

The α7 V is Sony's hybrid mirrorless camera with a 33 MP partially stacked full-frame sensor. It offers 30 fps blackout-free bursts, up to 7.5 stops of in-body stabilisation, 4K 60p video oversampled from 7K, a 4-axis screen and two USB-C ports. Reviews praise the handling and image quality; some owners report firmware freezes.

Specifications

SpecificationValue
Model codeILCE-7M5 (body only)
Sensor35 mm full-frame partially stacked Exmor RS CMOS; 33.0 MP effective for stills, 27.6 MP for video; 35.7 MP total

The partially stacked design speeds up sensor readout, reducing the skew (rolling shutter) the electronic shutter causes with fast-moving subjects.

Image processorBIONZ XR2 with integrated AI processing unit
Dynamic rangeUp to 16 stops (manufacturer claim)

Sony does not give the measurement conditions.

ISOStills 100–51200 (expandable to 50–204800); video 100–51200 (expandable to 100–102400)
Image stabilisation5-axis sensor shift; 7.5 stops at centre, 6.5 stops at the edge

Measured to CIPA 2024 with the FE 50 mm F1.2 GM lens; results may differ with other lenses.

Autofocus759-point phase detection; human, animal, bird, insect, car, train and airplane recognition; down to EV-4
Continuous shooting30 fps electronic shutter, 10 fps mechanical; blackout-free with full AF/AE tracking in electronic mode
Pre-CaptureRecords frames from up to one second before the shutter is fully pressed

Helps catch hard-to-predict moments such as a bird taking off.

ShutterElectronic 1/16000–30 s, mechanical 1/8000–30 s plus Bulb; flash sync 1/250 s
Viewfinder0.5-type OLED, 3,686,400 dots, about 0.78x magnification
Monitor3.2-type TFT touchscreen, 2,095,104 dots; 4-axis articulation (98° up, 40° down, 180° sideways, 270° rotation when open)

The screen can both swing out to face forward and tilt up or down on the body axis, so it works for both video and low-angle stills.

VideoUp to 4K 119.88p; full-frame 4K 60p oversampled from 7K (no pixel binning); 8-bit 4:2:0 and 10-bit 4:2:2; XAVC S, XAVC HS, XAVC S-I; S-Log3

Oversampling builds each 4K frame from more pixel data for extra detail.

Bit rateXAVC S-I 4K up to 600 Mbit/s (10-bit 4:2:2, 59.94p), XAVC HS 4K up to 280 Mbit/s

High bit-rate recording needs a card fast enough for the chosen format.

Recording timeAbout 90 minutes of continuous 4K 60p 4:2:0 8-bit recording

The duration depends on ambient temperature and settings.

Card slotsSlot 1: SD (UHS-I/II) or CFexpress Type A; Slot 2: SD (UHS-I/II)
USB2 × USB-C: port 1 10 Gbit/s (USB 3.2), port 2 480 Mbit/s (USB 2.0); both support USB PD

The battery can charge and the camera can run from either port; Sony says PD power capacity is 3–4 times that of the α7 IV.

Other connectionsFull-size HDMI Type-A; 3.5 mm mic and headphone; Multi Interface Shoe

There is no built-in Ethernet; wired FTP transfer works through a USB-LAN adapter.

WirelessWi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax (2.4/5/6 GHz); Bluetooth 5.3

6 GHz band availability varies by country.

BatteryNP-FZ100; about 630 shots with the viewfinder, about 750 with the monitor (CIPA)
BodyMagnesium alloy top, front and rear covers and internal frame; grip and front cover as one piece

Sony's page lists an anti-dust system but gives no explicit moisture or weather-resistance rating.

Dimensions and weightAbout 130.3 × 96.4 × 82.4 mm (72.3 mm grip to monitor); about 695 g with battery and card, 610 g body only
Operating temperature0–40 °C
In the boxNP-FZ100 battery, shoulder strap, body cap, shoe cap, eyepiece cup

No charger or cable is listed.

From the manufacturer

Sony presents the α7 V as the fifth-generation α7, with subject recognition from the AI unit in its BIONZ XR2 processor, up to 16 stops of dynamic range and stills and video combined in one body. Sony Asia

Strengths and limitations

  • Photography Blog notes that 4K 120p is offered in a cropped mode; it found the larger grip more comfortable than the α7 IV's and rated the 4-axis screen among the best it has used, judging ISO 50–6400 nearly noise-free. It criticised the lack of a top LCD and left-side controls, the absence of Open Gate and internal RAW video, no flash sync with the electronic shutter, and RAW files noisier than JPEGs at high ISO. The team sees the Canon EOS R6 Mark III ahead in video, burst shooting and IBIS.

  • Sony's first firmware update, 1.01, fixes noise that could appear in the preview image inside RAW files when RAW and HEIF are recorded together and a case where the camera would not power on with "Connect while Power Off" enabled; it also improves third-party CFexpress Type A card compatibility and general stability.

Owner experiences and issues

  • Seven owners posted in an October 2026 FredMiranda thread. patotts reports occasional freezes on firmware 2.0 that needed a battery pull, slow wake-up and brief overexposure, and found it snappier after a hard reset. austinlau says a Sony 20-70 mm lens was not recognised on the original firmware and that freezes recurred a few times on 2.0, each fixed by a restart. Ondrej had one or two freezes on the original firmware and none since updating. Malka_1 and BillinTexas describe only focus problems that lens firmware updates fixed; jojib and lightdreamer report no problems.

FredMiranda forum, 14–15 October 2026; ownership claims are not verified purchases. Cards used differ (Sony Tough, Novachip CFexpress Type A, Kingston/Panasonic SD). Few reports; the cause or spread of the freezes is unknown.
