MSI Titan 18 HX AI A2XWJG-070

The Titan 18 HX AI is MSI's top-end 18-inch desktop-replacement laptop. This configuration has a Core Ultra 9 285HX, a 24 GB RTX 5090 Laptop GPU running at up to 175 W, 96 GB of DDR5 and three SSDs totalling 6 TB. It adds a 4K-class Mini LED screen, a Cherry MX mechanical keyboard and two Thunderbolt 5 ports. Reviews find sustained performance very high but heat and fan noise noticeable in the fastest modes; at 3.6 kg it is built for power rather than portability.

Specifications

SpecificationValue
ProcessorIntel Core Ultra 9 285HX; 24 cores, up to 5.5 GHz, 36 MB cache

MSI says OverBoost Ultra can allocate up to 270 W combined to the CPU and GPU; the actual figure depends on the application.

GraphicsNVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU; 24 GB GDDR7

The laptop version does not share the desktop RTX 5090’s configuration or power, so its performance is not the same either.

GPU power limitUp to 175 W with Dynamic Boost; boost clock up to 2,160 MHz

Dynamic Boost shifts spare power to the GPU when the processor draws less; 175 W is the upper limit for this laptop GPU.

Display18-inch, 16:10, 3840 × 2400 (UHD+), 120 Hz, Mini LED, anti-glare

MSI lists VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certification and about 100% DCI-P3 colour coverage. Mini LED splits the backlight into zones, deepening blacks in dark scenes, though a faint halo can appear around bright objects.

Memory96 GB DDR5-6400 (2 × 48 GB); 2 SO-DIMM slots, 96 GB maximum

This configuration ships at MSI’s stated maximum; both slots are filled, so memory cannot be added, only swapped.

Storage6 TB total: 1 × 2 TB PCIe 5.0 and 2 × 2 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs

MSI lists four M.2 slots: one PCIe 5.0 x4 and three PCIe 4.0 x4. This SKU ships with three drives; MSI mentions Super RAID 5 support.

Thunderbolt2 × Thunderbolt 5 (DisplayPort 2.1, up to 140 W charging over USB-PD 3.1)

USB-C charging is capped at 140 W; MSI recommends a 65–140 W USB-PD adapter. Full performance needs the included 400 W adapter.

Other ports3 × USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps), HDMI 2.1 (4K 120 Hz / 8K 60 Hz), SD Express card reader, headset jack
Wired network2.5 GbE (Realtek RTL8125BG)
WirelessWi-Fi 7 (Intel Killer BE1750), Bluetooth 5.4
KeyboardSteelSeries mechanical keyboard, Cherry MX switches, per-key RGB, Copilot key
TouchpadBorderless haptic touchpad, 131 × 82 mm, RGB lighting

It gives vibration feedback instead of a physical click; the surface is merged into the palm rest.

Webcam1080p 30 fps, with IR sensor and privacy shutter

The IR sensor enables Windows Hello face sign-in.

AudioDynaudio sound system, 6 speakers
CoolingVapor chamber

A vapor chamber spreads heat over a wide surface, helping the CPU and GPU sustain high power for longer.

Battery99 Wh, 4-cell lithium polymer
Power adapter400 W external adapter

Operating systemWindows 11 Pro
ColourCore Black or Silver
Upgrades2 SO-DIMM slots; 4 M.2 slots (1 × PCIe 5.0, 3 × PCIe 4.0)

The global spec table lists up to 96 GB of DDR5-6400 for this chassis; actual memory speed can vary with the module and processor combination.

From the manufacturer

MSI presents the Titan 18 HX AI as a flagship gaming laptop that can feed up to 270 W combined to the CPU and GPU with OverBoost Ultra, with a SteelSeries mechanical keyboard and a Dynaudio sound system. MSI

Strengths and limitations

  • On Notebookcheck's 64 GB / 6 TB test unit the Mini LED screen averaged about 680 nits plugged in and about 456 nits on battery, with 1,153 nits measured in HDR on a 10% window. The backlight flickers at 15,430 Hz, a frequency most sensitive users will not notice. In Extreme Performance mode the CPU sustained 200 W while the GPU held 175 W, without notable throttling over a long run. Four NVMe slots, two Thunderbolt 5 ports and the Cherry MX keyboard count as positives; the lack of G-Sync/adaptive sync and Advanced Optimus, a slow SD reader, the haptic touchpad and high heat and noise as negatives. The RAM sits under an adhesive metal shield.

Notebookcheck: MSI Titan 18 HX AI A2XWJG review
  • Ultrabookreview's retail unit has a Mini LED panel with 1,008 dimming zones; blooming and ghosting are more visible than on rivals with 2,000+ zones, and local dimming cannot be switched off. Fan noise measured about 52 dBA in Extreme, 55–58 dBA with Cooler Boost, about 45 dBA in Balanced and under 35 dBA in Silent; the CPU runs at 85–100 °C under load and the keyboard area reaches the mid-50s °C. The battery lasted 4–5 hours of text work, 6–7 hours of video and about 1 hour of gaming. The haptic touchpad was unreliable for click-and-drag, and the newest MSI Center removed the useful Silent mode. No coil whine was heard.
