MSI Katana 17 HX B14WGK-032XES

The Katana 17 HX B14WGK is MSI’s 17-inch entry-to-mid gaming laptop. This configuration has an RTX 5070 Laptop GPU with up to 115 W, a 16-core Core i7-14650HX, a MUX switch and 32 GB of DDR5. Notebookcheck found GPU performance stable; the plastic chassis, loud fans under load, 8 GB of VRAM and short battery life were noted as weaknesses.

Specifications

SpecificationValue
ProcessorIntel Core i7-14650HX; 16 cores (8 performance + 8 efficiency), 24 threads, 30 MB cache, up to 5.2 GHz; Intel HM770 chipset

MSI states that the CPU and GPU can run at full power together on this model (Full Power CPU & GPU).

GraphicsNVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU; 8 GB GDDR7; up to 2347 MHz boost clock; up to 115 W maximum graphics power with Dynamic Boost

Graphics power (TGP) decides how fast the same GPU runs in different laptops; MSI notes the value may vary by scenario. 8 GB of video memory can be a limit at high texture settings.

Graphics modeDiscrete graphics mode (MUX design)

A MUX switch connects the display directly to the NVIDIA GPU, removing the integrated graphics pass-through in games; switching modes may need a restart.

Display17.3-inch FHD (1920 × 1080), 144 Hz, IPS-level panel

“IPS-level” is MSI’s term for panels with IPS-like wide viewing angles.

Two modules run in dual channel. MSI notes actual speed varies with the module combination and CPU.

With the single M.2 slot already used, adding capacity means replacing the SSD.

Strengths and limitations

  • In Notebookcheck’s test the RTX 5070 Laptop GPU performed stably at 115 W; the screen opens to 180° and there are two SO-DIMM slots. The chassis was found rickety and cheap-looking. Fans are quiet at idle at 31–34 dB(A) but quite loud under load at 50–59 dB(A). The 75 Wh battery lasted about 5 hours in the 150-nit Wi-Fi test. 8 GB of VRAM is not future-proof and the keyboard sits too far down; there is no USB4/Thunderbolt or card reader.
