Lenovo Legion Pro 7 16IRX9H (83DE0005US)

The Legion Pro 7 16IRX9H is Lenovo’s 2024 16-inch flagship gaming laptop (sold in the US as the Legion Pro 7i Gen 9). It combines the Core i9-14900HX and an RTX 4080 Laptop GPU drawing up to 175 W in an aluminium chassis with liquid-metal hybrid cooling. The display is a 240 Hz WQXGA IPS panel, and there are two SO-DIMM and two M.2 slots. Testing liked the display and speakers; battery life was short and the middle of the keyboard ran hot while gaming.

Lenovo lists the announce date as 22 January 2024. Specifications

SpecificationValue
ProcessorIntel Core i9-14900HX: 24 cores (8 P + 16 E), 32 threads; P-core 2.2/5.8 GHz, E-core 1.6/4.1 GHz; 36 MB Intel Smart Cache; Intel HM770 chipset
GraphicsNVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Laptop GPU, 12 GB GDDR6; 2280 MHz boost clock, 175 W TGP, 542 AI TOPS

175 W is the highest total graphics power Lenovo allows in this model; going above NVIDIA’s 60–150 W base range for the RTX 4080 Laptop GPU relies on Dynamic Boost 2.0. The desktop RTX 4080 is a different product.

Display16-inch WQXGA (2560 × 1600) IPS, non-touch, 500 nits, anti-glare, 16:10, 1200:1, 100% DCI-P3, 240 Hz; DisplayHDR 400, Dolby Vision, G-SYNC, X-Rite factory calibration

DisplayHDR 400 is VESA’s entry-level HDR tier; it does not require local dimming, so HDR looks less striking than on OLED or Mini LED. 240 Hz and G-SYNC give smooth, tear-free motion in fast games. Lenovo notes that “IPS” may also cover similar panel types such as PLS, ADS and AHVA.

Memory1 × 16 GB DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM; two slots, dual-channel capable; up to 32 GB in Lenovo’s offering

This configuration ships with a single module, so memory runs single-channel until a matching module is added to the second slot. Lenovo’s 32 GB limit is based on the modules it has tested.

Storage2 × 1 TB M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD; two M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slots (both used)

PCIe 4.0 x4 allows up to 8 GB/s in theory; real speed depends on the SSD. There is no card reader.

Ports1 × Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 40 Gbit/s (DisplayPort 1.4), 1 × USB-C 10 Gbit/s (Lenovo PD 140 W, DisplayPort 1.4), 4 × USB-A 5 Gbit/s (one Always On), 1 × HDMI 2.1 (up to 8K/60 Hz), 1 × RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet, 3.5 mm audio

140 W charging over USB-C needs Lenovo’s own adapter; other adapters may deliver less. Up to four independent displays including the internal one are supported; Lenovo lists up to 4K/60 Hz for external outputs. Ethernet is 1 Gbit/s, not 2.5G, and supports Wake-on-LAN.

WirelessIntel Killer Wi-Fi 6E AX1675i, 802.11ax 2×2 + Bluetooth 5.3
Keyboard and touchpad6-row with numeric keypad, 1.5 mm key travel; per-key RGB backlight; 75 × 120 mm buttonless Mylar surface, Precision TouchPad
Audio and cameraHARMAN stereo speakers (2 W × 2, super linear), Nahimic Audio, smart amplifier; dual microphones; FHD 1080p camera with electronic shutter (E-shutter)
CoolingHybrid cooling: air cooling + liquid-metal thermal interface

Liquid metal transfers heat between the chip and cooler more efficiently than standard paste, which makes servicing more delicate.

Battery and power99.9 Wh lithium-ion, Super Rapid Charge; 330 W slim-tip GaN adapter

Lenovo says Super Rapid Charge reaches 30% in 10 minutes, 70% in 30 minutes and 100% in 80 minutes. 99.9 Wh sits just under the usual airline battery limit. Lenovo quotes 10.4 hours of 1080p video playback at 150 nits.

Operating systemWindows 11 Home
SecurityFirmware TPM 2.0, BIOS passwords, self-healing BIOS, camera E-shutter; no fingerprint reader
Chassis, size and weightAluminium top and bottom, anodised, Eclipse Black; 363.5 × 262.1 × 21.95–25.9 mm; about 2.62 kg

Strengths and limitations

  • In Laptop Mag’s test the display averaged 456 nits (slightly below Lenovo’s 500-nit figure), 473 nits in HDR patterns, 108.7% of DCI-P3 and a Delta-E of 0.24. The four-driver HARMAN speakers were found very loud. The laptop lasted only 4 h 29 min in the web-browsing battery test and 51 minutes in PCMark 10 Gaming, both shorter than the previous generation. In a Metro Exodus loop the touchpad stayed around 26 °C while the G/H keys reached 40 °C and the bottom centre about 42 °C; the reviewer advised against gaming on your lap.

Laptop Mag review (2024); US base configuration with i9-14900HX, RTX 4080, 16 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD.
