SensorAPS-C (23.3 × 15.5 mm) Exmor R CMOS; approx. 26.0 MP effective (27.0 MP total)

Exmor R is a back-illuminated sensor: the circuitry sits behind the light-gathering surface, so more light reaches the pixels. Video uses up to about 19.9 MP of the sensor.

Sony
35.6 × 23.8 mm full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS with global shutter; about 24.6MP effective for stills, 20.3MP for video

A global shutter reads every row at once, so the skew seen on row-by-row sensors with spinning propellers, golf clubs or fast pans does not occur.

Sony
AutofocusFast Hybrid AF; 759 phase-detection points for stills, 495 for movies; AI recognition of humans, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains and aeroplanes; EV -3 to 20

Hybrid AF combines phase detection with contrast detection. The recognition function finds and tracks the selected subject type in the frame; the user chooses the subject type manually.

Sony
Fast Hybrid AF; 759 phase-detection points for stills, 627 for video Sony
ISOISO 100–32000 for stills (expandable to 50–102400); 100–32000 for movies Sony—
Image stabilisationSensor-shift 5-axis stabilisation; 5.0 stops (CIPA)

The 5-stop figure is pitch/yaw correction measured by Sony to the CIPA standard with the FE 50 mm F1.2 GM lens; it varies by lens and focal length. In video, Active mode crops the image slightly for stronger stabilisation.

Shutter and burstMechanical 1/4000–30 s, electronic 1/8000–30 s; flash sync 1/160 s; Hi+ 11 fps; buffer 59 RAW, 143 JPEG Extra Fine frames

The buffer figure is the approximate number of frames the camera can shoot in a row before waiting to write to the card.

Viewfinder0.39-inch XGA OLED; 2,359,296 dots; approx. 1.07× (0.70× 35 mm equivalent); 22 mm eyepoint Sony—
Screen3.0-inch touch TFT; 1,036,800 dots; side-opening vari-angle (176° opening, 270° rotation)

The side-opening screen can be turned to face forward so the user can see themselves when shooting selfies and vlogs.

Video4K up to 119.88p in 10-bit 4:2:2 (XAVC S/HS 280 Mbps); XAVC S-I 4K 59.94p at 600 Mbps; Full HD 119.88p; 4-channel 24-bit audio

10-bit 4:2:2 recording keeps more tonal information for colour grading. XAVC S-I compresses each frame separately for easier editing, but files are very large. Four-channel audio requires a compatible Multi Interface Shoe microphone.

Sony
Up to 4K 119.88p; XAVC S (8-bit 4:2:0 or 10-bit 4:2:2), XAVC HS (10-bit 4:2:2), XAVC S-I 4K 59.94p (600 Mbps)

XAVC HS is H.265-based, producing smaller files at the same quality but needing a stronger computer to edit. XAVC S-I records intra-frame only, easier to edit but with large files.

Sony
Card slotSingle SD slot; UHS-I and UHS-II

A UHS-II card helps with high-bitrate video and clears the buffer faster after long bursts. There is no second slot for backup recording.

ConnectionsUSB-C 5 Gbps (USB 3.2); micro HDMI (Type D, 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit output); 3.5 mm microphone and headphone; Multi Interface Shoe with digital audio interface

Over USB-C the camera can draw power and charge its battery with USB Power Delivery; it can also connect to a computer as a webcam over USB.

Sony

WirelessWi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac (2.4 and 5 GHz); Bluetooth 4.2

Bluetooth is used for sharing location from a phone and for remote control.

Sony

BatteryNP-FZ100; approx. 550 shots with the viewfinder, 570 with the screen (CIPA); approx. 95–100 minutes of actual movie recording

The battery can be charged inside the camera over USB.

Sony
NP-FZ100; about 400 shots with the viewfinder and 530 with the screen (CIPA); charging and power over USB PD Sony
Dimensions and weight122.0 × 69.0 × 75.1 mm; approx. 493 g with battery and card, 409 g body only Sony—
Operating temperature0–40 °C Sony—
Processor and ISO—BIONZ XR; ISO 250–25600 for stills (expanded 125–51200)

A base ISO of 250 means the lowest-noise setting is higher than on cameras with an ISO 100 base.

Sony
Burst and shutter—About 120 fps (Hi+), blackout-free; electronic shutter only, 1/80,000–30 s

Sony says AF/AE tracking continues at 120 fps. Speed Boost switches to a preset higher rate with one button during shooting; Pre-Capture keeps up to 1 second recorded before the shutter is pressed.

Sony
Flash sync—Up to 1/80,000 s (electronic); 1/500 s

Thanks to the global shutter, flash can be used even at the fastest shutter speed without switching to high-speed sync.

Sony
In-body stabilisation—5-axis sensor shift; 8.0 stops (CIPA)

The figure is measured with the FE 50mm F1.2 GM on pitch/yaw only.

Sony
Viewfinder and screen—0.64-type OLED viewfinder, 9,437,184 dots, 0.90x; 3.2-type 2,095,104-dot touchscreen (multi-angle)

The viewfinder refreshes at 60/120/240 fps. The screen tilts up 98°, down 40°, swings 180° to the side and rotates 270°.

Sony
Card slots—Two slots; each takes SD (UHS-I/II) or CFexpress Type A

CFexpress Type A cards are better suited to clearing the buffer quickly when shooting RAW at 120 fps.

Sony
Connectivity—USB-C 10 Gb/s (USB 3.2); plus Multi/Micro USB; 1000BASE-T wired LAN; Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2.4/5 GHz); Bluetooth 5.0; Type-A HDMI

Wired LAN is used to send photos quickly to agencies at sports and news events. Full-size HDMI gives a sturdier connection in the field than micro HDMI.

Sony
Size and weight—About 136.1 × 96.9 × 82.9 mm; about 702 g with battery and card (body only 617 g) Sony
