JPG (JPEG) is the most common format for photos. It uses lossy compression, dropping detail the eye doesn’t notice to keep files small. It has no transparency. JPG is lossy, and you choose the quality with the slider. For photos, 80–90% makes the file much smaller with a loss you won’t notice. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas in your PSD are filled with white or a colour you pick.

Frequently asked questions

Will converting to JPG reduce quality?

JPG is lossy, but at 85–90% quality the difference isn’t visible. Lower quality means a smaller file.
