This tool converts MP4 files to M4A. MP4 is the most widely used video format. It usually holds H.264 video and AAC audio and plays on phones, browsers, TVs and social networks.

M4A is Apple’s format for AAC audio. iPhone voice memos and iTunes use it; it is smaller than MP3 at the same quality. Only the audio of the MP4 video is kept and saved as M4A; the picture is dropped. M4A is lossy; you choose the quality from 96 to 320 kbps. 192–256 kbps is enough for music, 128 kbps for speech.

Frequently asked questions

Will audio quality drop when converting to M4A?

M4A is lossy, so there is a small loss you won’t hear at higher bitrates. If the source is already lossy, a higher bitrate won’t improve it.
