Compress Image

Shrink JPG, PNG and WEBP files without a visible loss in quality.

Use this tool to shrink images that are too big for an email, a form or a fast website. The image stays in the same format; only the quality setting and, if you want, the resolution are reduced.

With photos, most of the saving often comes from resolution. Scaling a 4000-pixel phone photo down to 2000 pixels makes the file about four times smaller and you won’t see the difference on screen. For PNGs, reducing the palette to 256 colours (for screenshots and graphics) is very effective.

How to use

  1. Select your images.
  2. Choose the quality and optionally a maximum width. For PNGs you can turn on "Reduce to 256 colours".
  3. Compress; the tool shows the old and new size of each file.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn’t an image get smaller sometimes?

If the image is already well compressed, re-encoding can make it bigger. In that case the tool keeps the original file and tells you.

What are the best settings?

75–80% quality and a 2000 px width is enough for most photos. For even smaller files, convert to WEBP or AVIF with the Image Converter.

Does the 256-colour option ruin photos?

It can cause banding in photos; the option is meant for screenshots, logos and flat graphics.
