Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5

The Galaxy Z Flip5 is Samsung’s 2023 clamshell foldable, with a 6.7-inch inner screen, a 3.4-inch Flex Window cover screen used for notifications, widgets and as a viewfinder when closed, and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy. Independent testing rated the larger cover screen and gapless closing as the main upgrades.

Galaxy Z Flip5; 8 GB RAM with 256 GB or 512 GB. Memory options and colours vary by market. The Z Flip4 and Z Flip6 are separate models.

Allowing for the rounded corners it is 6.6 inches. The fold line is visible at an angle and can be felt with a finger.

When closed it shows notifications and widgets and acts as a viewfinder for the rear cameras; unsupported apps can be enabled through the Samsung Labs setting. Because of the cutout at the bottom, the visible area is about 95% of the full rectangle.

Strengths and limitations

  • TechRadar counted the gapless closing and the Flex Window, nearly 80% larger, as the main upgrades, and wrote that the Samsung Labs setting that opens unsupported apps on the cover screen should be on by default. Although the camera hardware is the same as the Z Flip4, white balance and detail improved with the new image processor. The crease looked almost identical to the Z Flip4’s.

Owner experiences and issues

  • Buyers of open-box and refurbished Z Flip5 units were generally satisfied; one owner described battery life over the first 15 days as decent, and another mentioned some quirks typical of foldables. The pool is very small and the reviews concern used units, so no conclusion about failure frequency can be drawn.
