Technology glossary

Open Gate video

A video mode preserving a taller sensor image area, leaving room to crop different aspect ratios later.

A 3:2 recording, for example, preserves more image above and below a 16:9 landscape frame. One take can supply portrait and landscape versions, but the area that must survive the final crop still needs planning during shooting.

Open Gate is not a fixed resolution or frame rate. On the EOS R6 V, 3:2 RAW is 6960 × 4640 and MP4 is 6912 × 4608, at up to 29.97 fps. The 7K 59.94 fps RAW Light mode is not the same 3:2 Open Gate mode.
