Chrome Canary Becomes Clankium
New features for Google’s Chrome application first arrive in a test app called Chrome Canary. After being tested here, the stable version is released. However, about half an hour ago, I noticed something unusual during an update. While the app’s name remained the same in the Play Store, Chrome Canary version 80.0.3973.0 appeared as Clankium on my device’s home screen.
At first, I thought it might be an update related to integrating Samsung’s Kids Mode feature, as the icon had changed from the yellow Chrome symbol to a dinosaur. “Clank” is an internal codename for the Android-based Chrome app, so it might have evolved into Clankium, resembling the name Chromium.
An interesting and arguably unnecessary update, but it did make me wonder, “Has something happened at Google?” There’s no reason to be concerned, though. As of now, Google hasn’t released any statements or information regarding this update.
